Keystone Bunkhouse Travel Trailers: A Review

Exterior photo of the Keystone Bullet RVWhat do you get when you cross a well-planned living space with a lightweight bunkhouse camper? You get the Keystone Bullet! While some other manufacturers seem to struggle with the concept of creating optimized, truly livable floorplans in an RV, Keystone has built their reputation on it. In the process, they’ve built severalhighly livable bunkhouse models, all within a lightweight shell. For this review, we’ll focus on Keystone’s Bullet 311BHS and Bullet Premier 34BHPR models.

The Keystone Bullet 311BHS

While technically a lightweight RV, the Keystone Bullet 311BHS is a real heavyweight when it comes to floorplans and features. Unloaded, this popular RV weighs 6,880 lbs., which makes it light enough to be towed by most standard-duty trucks and SUVs. But pound for pound, this RV packs more punch into its lightweight frame than many of its competitors.

The 311BHS offers three slide-outs – one for the bunks, one for an inside kitchen work area, and a third for a dinette and sofa – to maximize interior space. Inside, a queen-sized bed, kitchen island/workspace, a pantry, and two sets of 32” x 74” bunks are standard, as are all these amenities:

  • 5 BTU ducted air conditioning
  • Night shades
  • CD/DVD/AM/FM Bluetooth stereo with auxiliary input
  • 32” LCD TV
  • Microwave oven
  • 6 cu. ft. double-door refrigerator
  • 3-burner high-output range
  • 9” deep oversized single-basin sink with high-rise faucet
  • Glazed-hardwood cabinet doors
  • Foot-flush toilet
  • Tub/shower surround with shelves
  • Full-extension drawer glides

Outside, this model features wide-stance E-Z lube axles, a 6-gallon gas/electric DSI water heater, radius entry door with gas strut, outside speakers, outside shower (for cold or hot water), tinted safety glass windows, 4 stabilizer jacks, a TV antennae and cable hook-up, electric power awning with adjustable arms, radial tires, and a black tank flush.

To keep campers comfortable, the 311BHS also offers a heated and enclosed underbelly and a 30K BTU furnace with residential heat ducts.

The cost of this luxurious lightweight RV has a base MSRP of $31,968. Options including a 15 BTU ducted air conditioning system, leather or fabric tri-fold sofa, and a grill are available.

The Keystone Bullet Premier 34BHPR

The Premier Brand began as a feature package for the Bullet Brand, but due to its popularity, it has evolved into a full-fledged sub-brand. The Bullet Premier 34BPR and the Bullet 311BHS share the same floorplan layout, with many of the same features, but the Premier goes a few steps beyond. Inside, this model has a slightly different feature set from the 311, incorporating:

  • Barrel-roof ceiling – allowing for additional interior height
  • Large tub
  • Futons under the slide-out bunks
  • Large pantry area
  • LED lighting
  • Raised-panel hardwood cabinet doors
  • Stainless-steel kitchen sinkwith a retractable faucet and a backsplash

The Bullet Premier weighs a bit more than the 311BHS (unloaded weight is 7,076 lbs.). It costs a bit more, too – the base MSRP for this model starts at $37,273. Options similar to those for the 311BHS are available.

The Pros

Both the Bullet 311BHS and the Premier 34BHPR fit a lot of luxury into a lightweight frame, so you won’t have to invest in a heavy-duty towing vehicle. Their spacious floorplans allow for easy movement, which is a big plus because their bunkhouse styling accommodates a good-sized camping crew. Overall, both models serve as a very comfortable home away from home.

The Cons

The Bullet 311BHS is considered a lightweight travel trailer, and therefore may not be as durable for extended travel as its traditional-weight counterparts. The Premier 34BHPR is also constructed as a lightweight model, however is more durable than the Bullet with 6-sided aluminum with vacuum bonded fiberglass construction. So think about the amount of traveling you’ll be doing and the distances you’ll be traveling before you invest. However, the cost savings in fuel and not having to purchase a heavy-duty towing vehicle make these lightweights a very attractive RV option.
